Learn to sail – fun sails!

Latest update

Hello everyone,

Our programme of guided fun sails continues next weekend on Saturday the 16th July 2022.

The Programme of Guided Fun Sails this year is as follows:

18th June 2022

16th July 2022

30th July 2022

13th August 2022

16th July 2022 – High Water 15:46

Arrive at 12:30

Shore based discussion 13:00 -13:30

Prep for sailing 13:30: – 14:00

Launch Safety Boats 14:00

Safety Boats on Water 14:15 – 16:15

As a fun sail this is a chance for members to go out and enjoy sailing.  In addition during these sessions our more experienced dinghy sailors will be on hand to help other members start out or improve their sailing.

We have a good range of club boats at our disposal from the single handed “RS Quba” to the much larger “RS Quest” which enable novices to be with an experienced dinghy sailor.  There is no fee for the use of Club boats for the “Guided Fun Sails”, however, they must be booked in advance (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com). As always, we encourage members to use their own boats where possible to enable as many members to participate as possible.

For those wanting to participate, we will split people into 3 groups:

  1. Beginners – those that would not be comfortable taking a boat out on their own
  2. Intermediate – those that can take a boat out on their own and are looking to gain confidence and develop skills
  3. Advanced – those looking to develop racing skills and tactics

Please note that during these sessions our safety boats will be focused in areas required for the groups above.  If you are going out independently, you should check the board on the day to find out where they will be.

Beginners

  • THis will include provision for trips out with experienced club helms and to have a go at sailing the boat or build on what you did during the first session. The number of boats involved will depend upon demand and the availability of helms.  This will include the use of the club RS Quests to enable children to be accompanied by their parents/guardian if required.
  • It is really important you let us know you are coming (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com) to the session to enable us to coordinate helms and boats.  Can I ask that all beginners register with me by Wednesday 13th July to enable me to plan the afternoon.

Intermediates

  • Depending on the needs of the participants, we will run through the basis technique before going out.
  • Our experienced dinghy sailors will then be manning the safety boats to offer advice on the water.
  • Please remember to book a club boat if required (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).

Advanced

  • There will be pre briefings on subjects such as racing tactics, collision regs and racing rules.
  • Our experienced dinghy sailors will then be manning the safety boats to offer advice on the water.
  • We will establish mini courses on the day for you to practice your skills.
  • Please remember to book a club boat if required (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).

You are reminded that children remain the responsibility of parents/guardians at all times (both on land and on the water) and parents/guardians should assess the risks prevalent on the day (weather, competency, equipment, etc.).

The Sailing Sub Committee is very aware that this is often a barrier for children transitioning from novices to being able to sail single handed unless they have parents who can sail and establish a safe environment for them to gain confidence and ability.  The Club is not a training centre with qualified instructors, however many of the members will be able to give help and advice in this respect so please reach out to us.

Please also note that these events are for members only.

Lastly, this is only possible through the generosity of volunteer members giving up their time to help both on and off the water.  Please let me know if you would be willing to assist with any of the following: shore crew / safety boat crew / experienced helm (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).

Regards

Kevin

Helms – critical for success

Beginners

After our limited ability to accommodate novices last year, our first session of the year will include provision for trips out with experienced club helms and to have a go at sailing the boat. The number of boats involved will depend upon demand and the availability of helms. This will include the use of the club RS Quests to enable children to be accompanied by their parents/guardian if required.
It is really important you let us know you are coming (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com) to the session to enable us to coordinate helms and boats. There is no strict deadline for this but please give as much notice as possible as I would hate to have to disappoint a child on the day.

Intermediates

Depending on the needs of the participants, we will run some refresher talks before going out.
Our experienced dinghy sailors will then be manning the safety boats to offer advice on the water.
Please remember to book a club boat if required (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).

Advanced

There will be pre briefings on subjects such as racing tactics, collision regs and racing rules.
Our experienced dinghy sailors will then be manning the safety boats to offer advice on the water.
We will establish mini courses on the day for you to practice your skills.
Please remember to book a club boat if required (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).

Enterprise Class for 2022

The Sailing Committee has received a suggestion to trial an Enterprise Dinghy class race this year. If there is sufficient interest, this will be accommodated in a later Guided Fun Sail this year. Please let me know (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com) if you are interested in taking part and which sessions you would be available for.

Race Officer briefings

Later in the programme, we are also looking to provide briefing sessions on the role of the Race Officer for anyone who would like to undertake this role in the future.

Parents and Guardians

Please remember that children remain the responsibility of parents/guardians at all times (both on land and on the water) and parents/guardians should assess the risks prevalent on the day (weather, competency, equipment, etc.).

Volunteers

Lastly, this is only possible through the generosity of volunteer members giving up their time to help both on and off the water. Please let me know if you would be willing to assist with any of the following: shore crew / safety boat crew / experienced helm (via URYCsailtraining@gmail.com).
