A breezy day with spells of bright warm sunshine certainly helped draw the crowds to Hullbridge Regatta. Everyone could watch up close the thrills and spills of dinghy racing.
Gusty conditions
The river was filled with sails. You could see some expert helms showing off their skills. Recovery from a spectacular capsize was the highlight for many onlookers and even drew applause from the audience at one point.. With several boats blown over because of the gusty winds, there was plenty of action for visitors to watch. Consequently Up River Yacht Club’s safety boat was certainly kept busy. Later they were standing by to recover model yachts following a display of racing by Southend Model Boat Club.
Racing
Close up racing. The helms ranged from age 9 to over 69. There was some fast and furious racing to watch as 17 boats jostled for position in windy conditions.
Lots to see
A great range of attractions. There were stalls to see on the club lawn and inside the club house. As an added attraction his year there was a 3d printing demonstration. This stand was busy all afternoon and created a great deal of interest with visitors asking lots of questions.
Visitors could check out the crafts and cards inside the club conservatory or enjoy a drink on the club deck that offers a fine view of the river.
Live music
The bands played for over 3 hours creating a great atmosphere for everyone to just sit back and relax. The sun broke through the clouds in the afternoon to make the day complete.
Rochford Hundred vintage engine and tractor club
The club brought their impressive range of vintage engines that are always of interest to visitors. In addition to their 1922 Ford Model T there was a new addition for this year; a rather special 1934 two seater tourer complete with bear.
The Crew
Members at Up River Yacht Club volunteered to help and make it a special day for people to attend. With record numbers of visitors there wasn’t a parking space left in the large village car park. This is because the regatta is now drawing lots of visitors to Hullbridge from Southend, Hockley, Rayleigh and Benfleet.
All proceeds raised are donated to charity. This year the club supported Fairhavens and the RNLI.
