Owners comment
I have bought a larger yacht and as much as I like Idleflite 2, as she is an easy and rewarding boat to sail, the time has come to sell. After I purchased her in 2011, with exception of a couple of club races she has been used solely for river sailing, the occasional weekend and annual club cruises. She is an excellent single-hander with all running rigging led aft to the cockpit.
This Hunter Duette 23 is an exceptional example and comprehensively equipped and maintained to a high standard.
Spars and rigging
Fractional rig, Z Spars (1989). Boom gooseneck refurbished 2018. Stainless steel standing rigging (renewed 2003 – invoice), lowers replaced 2017. Back stay tensioner. Plastimo 406S headsail furling with drum located below decks in the anchor well. 2 x Lewmar 7 sheet winches. 1 x Lewmar 6 Halyard winch. All running rigging led aft to the cockpit.
Mast lowering equipment
Demountable alloy A frame to lower the mast (that pivots in a stainless steel tabernacle) dedicated sheet and block arrangements with deck mounted pivot points for the A frame. This Hunter Duette was originally fitted out for sailing on the Norfolk Broads with single handed mast lowering and raising capability.
Sails
Hyde dacron mainsail (2013) excellent condition. Has two reefing points, plus an additional flattening reef close to the boom. Spare Hyde mainsail – serviceable (1989). Arun Genoa dacron 150% (2003) good condition, UV strip replaced 2017/8. Jib – very good condition, (2003 but little used).
Protection
Matching dark red sunbrella material in excellent condition:
- dodgers with name (2014).
- sprayhood (2015) has an additional zipped on rear panel that extends the accommodation by allowing standing headroom in the main hatchway.
- sail cover (2015).
Appearance
The cabin windows were replaced in 2010, the external red cabin decals replaced professionally 2017.
Engine
Honda BF5 Four stroke 2010 model year, fitted 2011. Battery charging version. Maintained by marine engineers. New impeller and water pump housing 2018, new starter 2020, serviced 2020.

Accommodation
This Hunter Duette 23 has four berths in two cabins with the benefit of a significantly improved main cabin layout. Teak faced furniture throughout, better equipment and comprehensive fittings are far superior to the standard Duette. The picture above (port side) illustrates the smoked glass style sliding plastic doors to the drinks cabinet and locker below, beneath this seat cushion there is access to a 50 litre fresh water flexible tank (Plastimo new 2015).
On the starboard side of the main cabin there is a stainless steel Plastimo Neptune hob and grill. It is gimballed and is fitted with a fiddle rail and pan retainers. There is plumbing for an additional 50 litre flexible water tank and water filter located in a locker beneath the cooker. Whale fresh water pump (2014). To the rear of the hob there is another locker for saucepans etc.
Above the pan locker there are custom shelves, immediately aft of the shelves are retainers for cups and glasses plus a gas lighter. A further upgraded feature of Idleflite 2 is the stainless steel sink set in a tile surround with waste water pipe draining overboard via a seacock. There is stowage beneath the sink in plus a small cutlery drawer.
The forecabin has standard V berths with stowage beneath including a small removeable icebox. In the photo above the forecabin matching bunk cushions were temporarily stored ashore as when cruising the owner uses this cabin to store an inflatable. LED lighting. Plastimo clock. Twin vents to anchor locker.
The heads are on the starboard side beneath a hinged panel. Custom curtains (shown tied back in the picture above) close off the forecabin for privacy. The Jabsco marine wc (fitted circa 2010).
There are non-standard headlinings (removeable for access) and fitted carpet throughout.
The cabin table stows away when not in use, it can be used either in the main cabin or fitted above the port bunk to form a chart table. In addition to high gloss teak faced cabin doors there is a heavy duty main cabin door offered with the boat plus an overwinter security door for use during layup.

Hull, keel and rudder
White GRP hull and coachroof, with strong white plastic rubbing strakes. Twin keel (bilge keel) cast iron with a fine profile and 50 percent ballast ratio, much praised in the yachting press for offering exceptional performance and windward ability. Tiller steering with a transom hung rudder. All seacocks are double clipped and inside the hull have adjacent wooden bungs on lanyards.
The rudder blade was refurbished in 2019 by replacing the original glued joints with epoxy and then epoxy sheathing the blade with multi-layer tip reinforcement. This work was undertaken, with boat builder supervision, to overcome a known fault with Hunter rudders where the glue eventually fails creating splits in the blade that allows water to ingress into the timber strip construction. The remedial work was carefully undertaken to preserve the original profile/dimensions of the rubber blade achieving long term comprehensive strengthening.
Construction
This Hunter Duette was moulded by Hunter Boats Ltd in 1989. The subsequent fitting out was undertaken by the original owner to an exceptional standard. The hull was epoxied from new. New decals were professionally applied in 2017 closely following the original design red ‘flash’ that extends either side of the cabin windows with Duette 23 (2017). Self draining cockpit and aft locker. TekDeck covered cockpit seat and cockpit sole. Self draining gas locker, twin gas bottles and changeover tap.
Self draining anchor well, stainless steel pulpit and pushpit, alloy stanchions with stainless guard wires. Stainless steel grab rails on the coachroof. Idleflite 2 retains the original ‘cassette’ arrangement for the mounting of the outboard in the well, which makes removal of the outboard very straightforward.
