What’s on in October 2025

Laying up Supper

The laying Up Supper is on Saturday 18th of October, from 7.30pm. Always a popular event!

Supper menu features 2 courses:

  • For those who want to ‘go large’ sausage and mash in Yorkshire pudding
  • There is also sausage and mash without the Yorkshire if you prefer
  • Followed by a choice of two deserts

A hearty supper for just £7.50 per person and £5.00 for under 18’s.

If you want to go (first indications are it’s going to be popular) please:

  1. Message Helen on 07817 869125 or email events.uryc@gmail.com stating the number of tickets you need and any dietary requirements. PLEASE note this must be done by Wednesday 15th of October to avoid disappointment.

2. Credit the club account for your tickets. Most members will already have these loaded in their bank accounts from paying subs etc. If anyone doesn’t know them, they can be messaged/sent to you separately.

Cruiser Recovery

This is the busiest time of year for cruiser recoveries. There were a lot of potential recovery dates on the club events calendar however, to check which of these dates are ‘live’ (the ones that are going ahead). These are displayed on the recovery lists in the club foyer.  It is vital for any cruiser owner who wants their boat lifted out for the winter to ‘get your name of the list’ asap. Also, please add your name to the another lift out day or two as a helper on a day when your boat is not being recovered.

For any recovery session where there are, say 7 boats being lifted out, to make the task easier and safer we need a minimum of:

  • 5 people on the slipway including the ‘foreman’ operating the winch remote control
  • 5 people including the owner of any boat being lifted out/moved to position and place blocks to accept the recovered yacht
  • 1 tractor driver
  • 2 boatman ideally in the event a yacht runs into difficulty and requires a tow
  • 1 banksman to look out for the general public and potentially stop the operation if people want to cross  the moving winch cable

That seems a lot of people, but these are the sort of numbers we need when we have a lot of boats to shift. It also explains why its very difficult to recover less than 3 yachts as we simply don’t have enough owners and crew to cover all of the tasks. Because of this, we may need to cancel the odd scheduled session if there are insufficient helpers. Please consider your fellow cruiser owners and put your name down to help for at least two lift out sessions. Complete the lists confirming when your boat will be lifted out, plus the days you can come along to help, as soon as possible.
